HOME SECURITY

Considering the amount of time we spend in our homes, there is no doubt to why we spend so much time worrying about the safety and security within our homes.

 An easy way to make your home feel safe is to lock your doors – if someone is scouting your home, they will see that you always use keys to enter.

 Invest in an external motion sensor system to trigger a main external light to light up your front step, which is an easy to afford option – lights scare prowlers off.

 Investing in a basic home security system is worthwhile – if any exterior windows are doors are opened while the system is active, sirens will sound and a signal will be sent to an alarm monitoring company.

 Consider investing in a fire-proof and water-proof safe if you have a higher end need for safety and valuable assets to protect. If you want to keep any irreplaceable documents, they need to be kept in a waterproof environment.

 Learn about your neighborhood, and if your home is in a neighborhood with a higher rate of crime, consider installing burglar bars on windows. They are a visible sign of physical security.

 Keep your curtains closed – they make it harder to see in if someone is trying to figure out if you have anything worth stealing.

 The safest home is one in a safe community. Be involved in your community – a strong community has a better chance of rejecting any negative criminal elements as well as supporting positive ones. Community programs like Neighborhood Watch encourage each member of a community to watch out for each other, and as a result, common crime in those neighborhoods is dramatically lower.

Few people really bother about security until something happens to them or a neighbor. The public’s complacent attitude is the burglar’s best friend and your worst enemy. There are many things the average person can do to make their home less of a target. The above tips will get you started on the right road. Remember, the two things a burglar fears most are being seen and having to take too much time to complete the crime.
NB: when implementing community neighborhood watch programs, call on us – we can sit in and give you professional advice for no charge.

CRIMINALS GETTING SMARTER

With the low employment rate we are currently experiencing, Zimbabwe has just started experiencing some of crimes that we have never anticipated before. Criminals are getting smarter as educated people are being left jobless hence resorting to crime. As Corporates you have to position yourselves to deal with the risks in your business. We are experiencing major break in’s that are intelligently executed and have various con artists in the country with bogus businesses, out to fleece Corporate organizations. First and foremost, a company must come up with a Comprehensive Security Plan which should have the following key aspects:
– Communication: All employees who deal with external organisations should be cautioned to assess who they deal with and raise an alarm if they is any suspicion.
– Risk Analysis: analyse key areas in your organization were risk is greater and work on minimizing those risks. We can carry out a security survey on your behalf and provide you with tailor made ways to mitigate those risks.
– Implementation: is key to successfully preventing loses. This should be done with the aid of security professionals to make it full proof.
– Monitoring: constant monitoring of proceedings is imperative to ensure the system is being implemented as planned.
– Security Reviews: These should be done quarterly in order to replace failed systems with better ones and to upgrade systems as knowledge base increases as a way of continual improvement.
Top management must take the first step to produce and implement security plans through the development of a comprehensive security policies involving the above key aspects. The plan must be documented, communicated to all stakeholders and should be reviewed periodically. There should be definite measures put in place to mitigate the risks identified. It must have the implementation aspect clearly spelt out. In all this, management involvement is critical.

STOP CRIMMINALS BEFORE THEY GET NEAR

The outer perimeter of your premises is your first line of defense. We would all rather stop criminals before they get into our yards. Perimeter security is both physical and operational and consists of either natural or structural barriers this ranging from a hedge, high fence, guard patrols, motion sensors or just a good lock.

The following are ways to secure your perimeter:

Security checks: always go around your perimeter to check for weaknesses or spots were your fence or wall has developed a weakness; particularly gaps were an intruder can gain entry. This is so you are the first to notice and hence take steps to secure those positions.

Electric fence: these will deter criminals and can be connected to your alarm or rapid response control room for detection as soon as someone attempts to get into your premises.

Security Signage: signs in strategic places that note the area is monitored or that security is on site is an effective perimeter security tool in terms of deterring burglars.

Engage Employees: Employees will realize a stranger is on site almost immediately, but will do nothing about it unless they have been inducted on what to when they do find themselves in that situation. Do they report the visitor, or do they hold open the door and allow access to your building.

Anti-climb fence: These make it impossible for a burglar to climb over your fence and gain entry into your yard.

Security beams/outside sensors: these are intrusion detection controls as we assume that if someone wants to get through the outer perimeter, they will.  This means we need to supplement our fence with intrusion detection technology that would notify you that there is an intruder in the yard before they get into the building.

Security is an ongoing process that needs to be reviewed time after time as trends and technology changes. Remember SECURITY BEGINS WITH YOU!
Please do not hesitate to contact us for any information pertaining to your perimeter security.

Car Break-Ins: Avoiding Car Theft Smash-and-Grab

It takes less than a minute for a thief to break your car window and snatch your iPad, laptop, or purse on the front seat. Think about that the next time you dash in a store to buy a coke or bread. Don’t allow yourself to become a statistic. Car break-ins are a huge problem especially at shopping malls, schools and the airport. SECURICO offers some common sense habits and tips for preventing car break-ins.

–        Keep your car visible – Park in well-lit areas and preferably near an on-duty parking lot attendant. Avoid having your car concealed by larger vehicles or trees.

–        Don’t make it easy – Keep your car alarm on, windows and sunroofs closed and doors locked. Almost one-fourth of thefts from vehicles are from unlocked cars.

–        Hide your valuables – Experienced thieves often stake out parking lots to watch for people putting items in their trunk. Help prevent car break-ins by putting valuables like laptops, messenger bags, and electronic devices into your trunk before you get to the parking lot.

–        Trust your instincts – If you see suspicious activity or persons, find another spot to park and inform security at that place.

–        Keep your vehicle tidy – Almost any worthless personal item that’s visible from the outside–even an empty shopping bag–could be seen as a valuable or a carrier of valuables. By keeping your vehicle tidy a burglar will not confuse worthless things for valuables.

–        Pick a parking spot where there is a lot of activity. Auto thieves prefer breaking into cars in isolated areas.

–        One of the “hottest” items that thieves are targeting is the GPS system in your vehicle. Take the whole unit out of your vehicle including the mounting bracket. Don’t leave your vehicle unattended with the GPS system in plain sight and also wipe the windscreen so that the suction marks left from the system are wiped away.

As always be security conscious, it’s what separates you from being the statistic.

DANGERS FROM WITHIN

Very often and normally when we speak of security we only seem to concentrate on external threats but we never look at those threats to our safety that can come from within the environment we live in. In a household or at the office they are various items that we use every day that can very well threaten our safety and wellbeing. As a security firm we have realized that we also need to conscientise our stakeholders and the general public of the risks that are lying within.

Some of the products you use at home are potentially hazardous. Safe handling and proper disposal of these materials will protect you, your family and our environment. Store all house hold hazardous waste out of the reach of children and pets. If the label is unreadable, missing or you can’t use your original container, clearly label the container with the true contents.

Store garden and general tools in appropriate places and never leave anything lying around in the yard which can injure your children or visitors who might be unaware of that hazardous item that is not in place. Keeping our households and offices neat will go a long way in making those environments safe for us and our families. Remember we should always be conscious about our environment not only when we are outside our homes but also when at home or at the office. This will indeed keep you safe from both internal and external threats.

As we strive to protect ourselves against intruders let us also protect our environment keeping in mind that danger may come from within and jeopardize our safety.
